The Arnhold Graduate Dance Education Program

Launched in Fall 2012, The Arnhold Graduate Dance Education Program (AGDEP) is designed for ambitious dance artists and educators looking for challenge, personal growth, and professional advancement. Our curriculum combines courses in the School of Education

with Dance Department courses, as well as specialized Dance Education courses which focus on applying teaching methods to dance classroom environments. In addition to AGDEP's rigorous coursework, students are part of a supportive community of dance educators where academic work is enhanced through workshops, master classes, performances, and seminars.

Fostering Artistry

In addition to the academically rigorous coursework, AGDEP provides opportunities for its students to cultivate their unique artistic voices alongside their teaching practices. The AGDEP Salon Series allows students to apply for the opportunity showcase their creative work in professional performance studios throughout NYC in addition to the AGDEP Annual Performance, which takes place in the Hunter College Dance Department's historic Peggy Theater.

Cultivating Teaching Practices

Each AGDEP student participates in the Student/Supervised Teacher Seminar course, which serves as a culminating fieldwork experience. Teacher candidates are assigned to a mentor teacher at a New York City public school. While enrolled in Student/Supervised Teaching Seminar, students work full-time Monday through Friday for the entire school day under the guidance of their mentor teacher. Once employed as a dance educator with the NYCDOE, each graduate receives dance-specific resources and is paired with a NYS licensed dance educator/mentor, who provides personalized academic and professional support through the Arnhold Dance Teacher Support Program.

AGDEP's partnerships across Hunter College provide students with opportunities to develop their teaching practices. Partnerships with the Muse and Macauley Scholars Program and Humanities Program offers AGDEP students the opportunity to teach specialized dance composition workshops to undergraduate Arts students. Our High and Middle School Visiting Program provides students with opportunities to develop their dance technique pedagogies, teaching technique classes in Hunter's iconic dance studios to local middle and high school students who are interested in pursuing Dance in college.

National Honor Society for Dance Arts

Hunter College is proud to house a collegiate chapter of the National Honor Society for Dance Arts, the only national honor society for dance studies.
